ODD FELLOWS HOME/BELVOIR WINERY
In November of 2013, I did school visits at ten elementary schools in Liberty, Missouri, including Lewis and Clark Elementary my last day in town. After I gave my first couple of presentations, the librarians told me about Coach Chris Choice and his ghost story from the Odd Fellows Home, now known as the Belvoir Winery.
Coach Choice works part time at the beautiful old estate as a handy man, and he got his son Connor a summer job between semesters at college. When he told me his story – Connor’s story – while I was in Missouri, so I wrote and asked the librarian to ask the coach if he could retell it via email. I wanted the story for GHOSTLY EVIDENCE. Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough room in the book. So here is the story in Coach Choice’s own words.
After visiting the estate myself (see photos), I am convinced Coach Choice is telling the absolute truth. But read his retelling and decide for yourself.
CHRIS CHOICE ON THE ODD FELLOWS HOME
I'm Chris Choice, the PE teacher at Lewis and Clark. I got your message and I would be glad to help.
My son’s name is Connor. He was working at the winery doing maintenance and cleaning in between his freshman and sophomore years in college. It was mid-July in 2011. He worked early mornings before the winery opened for business.
The building, the main winery building was once the Odd Fellows orphanage. Connor was working at about 8 am by himself in the front staircase. He was washing windows on the 2nd floor landing. He finished three windows and ran out of paper towels. So he put his Windex on the window sill and went down a flight of twenty stairs. He walked ten feet to the bathroom were his cleaning supplies were stored. He grabbed the towels and went back up the stairs.
When he got back, he couldn't find the bottle he had just put down on the window sill. He looked everywhere on the landing, which is only 8 feet by 15 feet. Then he went down stairs in frustration to get another bottle.
On his way down the stairs, he saw it – the cleaning fluid bottle hanging from the chandelier in the middle of the main entrance. It was about 9 feet off the floor, so,he had to use a step ladder to retrieve it. .At this point Connor started yelling for whoever put his bottle up on the light to come out and quit messing around.
There was no one there. Not a soul.
Forty-five minutes later, I arrived to find Connor waiting. He told me the story and we both went inside where the mystery had unfolded. The hair on the back of my neck was sticking straight up the whole time we were in the building.
Connor asked me if I was playing around and I told him that I hadn't even left home when it had happened. Two other workers came in at 11:00 am when the winery opened and Connor quizzed them on there whereabouts. No one had been there.
Connor finished the summer working for us but would never alone again be in that building. I hope this is what you were looking for. Good luck on your book!
Yours truly,
Coach Choice
